Medical Laboratory Program

Our program delves into the fascinating world of medical laboratory science, where cutting-edge technology meets critical patient care. You'll explore the scientific principles underlying laboratory tests, from basic hematology to complex molecular diagnostics. Our curriculum blends rigorous coursework with hands-on experience in state-of-the-art laboratories. You'll learn to perform a wide range of laboratory procedures, analyze data, and interpret results to assist in patient diagnosis and treatment.

We emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical considerations within the healthcare context. Our graduates are highly sought after by hospitals, clinics, and research institutions worldwide.

Dr. Najwa Ali Al Jahdhami - Medical Laboratory Program

The Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) is a 4-year BSC program, delivered over 8 semesters and 3 summer semesters. The program is structured to provide the students with a challenging but rewarding learning experience. The program is organized developmentally to allow the students to initially develop a sound knowledge of the theory and skills underpinning the practice of medical laboratory sciences and then extend and apply this learning to more complex situations. Conforming to the program philosophy and developmental program design, the different courses form an interlinking framework that commences with fundamental laboratory concepts and progresses into more complex areas of expertise that require horizontal and vertical integration of knowledge and skills. A perusal of the rest of the curriculum reveals that the core areas of medical laboratory practice form the main pillars of the program. Understanding the pathophysiology of disease processes combined with knowledge of the relevant investigation panels forms the cornerstone of each of the MLS courses. The rest of the courses provide the additional support that MLS students require to become properly qualified medical laboratory technologists.

The BSc in Medical Laboratory Science Program is designed to encourage the development of knowledge, understanding and skills with increasing complexity as the students advance through the four years of the program. To facilitate and encourage a student-centred approach to learning, generic program outcomes have been developed for each level of study. These ‘program level outcomes’ reflect the expectations of student learning for each level of the program representing the increasing complexity of the program content through the years of study, and should also serve as a benchmark for students to reflect on how their learning relates to the expected outcomes.

1.Apply foundational knowledge of biology, chemistry, and medical sciences to laboratory practice.

2. Analyze laboratory data to provide accurate diagnostic results.

3. Perform clinical laboratory procedures using standardized techniques and protocols.

4. Evaluate the quality and reliability of laboratory test results.

5. Demonstrate competence in using and maintaining laboratory equipment.

6. Interpret laboratory findings in the context of patient health.

7. Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals regarding laboratory results.

8. Adhere to ethical and professional standards in medical laboratory practice.

9. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient care.

10. Implement quality control and assurance measures in laboratory settings.

11. Utilize current technologies and methodologies to improve laboratory efficiency.

12. Critique scientific literature to stay informed about advancements in medical

laboratory science.
